Community Talks

Our mission is to serve the public by providing useful information that assists in dis-ease prevention and self-actualization in series of public talks by health professionals, self-recovery support groups and non-government Organisations (NGOs)

    - Animal Therapy Public Talk

A wide range of human health professionals and practitioners recognize what many people in the animal care giving fields and everyday pet owners have known for years: that pets can be good for our health and well-being. Companion animals are being introduced into the therapeutic regimens of many health care institutions: nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, psychiatric institutions and others. Therapeutic riding programs improve the motor skills and coordination of the physically challenged. Pets help inmates in correctional facilities and juvenile offenders to learn empathy and compassion. Autistic children swim with dolphins. In short, wherever people have special needs, someone with creativity and an animal with the proper temperament can probably create an imaginative way to being pets and people together for mutual benefit.

    - What is Diabetes? Managing Diabetes

Millions of people are affected by either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes and a huge percentage is over age 60. What is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can be associated with serious complications, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.

The good news about diabetes is that treatments are very effective and the more you know about your condition, the more you can do to help yourself stay healthy; lead the sort of life you want to live, and to avoid the health problems associated with diabetes in later life.

Managing Diabetes - If you have diabetes and you want to keep fit and healthy, you need good and regular healthcare. It's very important that you control your diabetes well and get any possible problems detected and treated early. Health Professionals will give you the facts you need to manage your diabetes, from diagnosis to everyday living with the condition.

LCB Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA)

The formal definition of animal-assisted activities is:

"AAA provides opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational, and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life. AAA are delivered in a variety of environments by specially trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and/or volunteers, in association with animals that meet specific criteria." (From Standards of Practice for Animal-Assisted Activities and Therapy)

Examples:

A group of volunteers takes their dogs and cats to a nursing home once a month to "visit." The visit occurs as a large-group activity with some direction and assistance provided by facility staff. The volunteer group facilitator keeps an informal log about who was visited.
An individual brings her dog to a children's long-term care facility to "play" with residents. Although the staff is involved in the visits, the staff has not set treatment goals for the interactions. Aside from signing in and out, no records are kept.
A dog obedience club gives an obedience demonstration at a residential facility for teenagers with delinquent behavior.

Peace Poster Contest

"Peace Without Borders" is the theme of the 2005-06 Peace Poster Contest. Lions clubs can sponsor the program in their community for children in local schools or organized sponsored youth groups. Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, 2005, are eligible to participate. Through the contest, students are encouraged to visually depict their interpretation of the contest's theme.

Judging:

Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.

Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prizewinner and 23 merit award winners.
